Michael S. Willner
Vice Chairman and CEO, Penthera, 2008 Cable Hall of Fame
Michael S. Willner spent his entire career in the cable television industry. Prior to becoming Vice Chairman and CEO of Penthera, a provider of intelligent portable video software solutions for TV networks and content distributors; he co-founded Insight Communications in 1985. He served as the cable TV company’s CEO, a director and vice chairman of the board until the company was sold to Time Warner Cable in February, 2012.
Michael began his career in 1974 as the program director and news reporter for a small suburban New York cable system after graduating from the Boston University College of Communications. Soon after, he shifted his focus to general management and eventually became the chief operating officer of Vision Cable Communications, a cable company owned by a division of Newhouse Newspapers.
After starting Insight Communications, Michael also became very active in industry affairs and has been one of cable's most active and effective ambassadors on Capitol Hill, testifying regularly before Congress on industry issues and pending legislation. He has served two consecutive terms as chairman of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), the cable industry's trade lobby, served on its executive committee for many years and chaired its political action committee (CablePAC) from 2000 until 2012. Michael also served as chairman of the board of the Cable Center from 2007 through 2011, on the executive committee of CableLabs, and on the board of directors of C-SPAN, and the Walter Kaitz Foundation.
Michael was a recipient of the NCTA's 2004 Vanguard Award for Distinguished Leadership and a 2005 inductee into the Broadcasting & Cable Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame in 2008.

Hubert 'Hub' Schlafly
Former President, TelePrompTer, 2008 Cable Hall of Fame
Born in August 1919, "Hub" Schlafly graduated from the University of Notre Dame, BSEE '41, and then later enrolled in graduate studies at Syracuse University. He joined General Electric and was soon assigned to MIT Radiation Laboratory as a Gunfire Control Radar project engineer. In 1947 he became Director of Television Research for 20th Century Fox. Projects included Large Screen Television projection, TV Broadcasting and experiments in cross-polarization microwave transmission. He was enrolled as a Fellow in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers in 1951 and is a senior member of IEEE and SCTE.
A co-founder, director, and vice president of TelePrompTer Corporation, he served as Executive Vice President, Technical Operation and later as President. In addition to prompting services for broadcasters and public speakers, TelePrompTer pioneered such things as multimedia information displays, theater television, broadcast studio equipment and systems, military command and control room design, installation and operation and, finally, cable television system operation. The company led the way into new cable technologies such as the conception and testing of multi-channel, multi-directional microwave, which Hughes Aircraft Company perfected and is marketing as AML Microwave. Faced with the problem of off-air co-channel interference in urban cable systems, he worked with Paramount, Jerrold and Hamlim engineers in the development of the set-top converter and subsequent broadband expansion of cable for carriage of non-broadcast channels. He directed the first installation and testing of two-way transmission on an operating cable system in Los Gatos, California.
His association with Hughes included election as a Director of ThetaCom and the subsequent development of the Subscriber Response System (SRS), installed and tested in El Segundo, California in 1972. IN the late 1960s, Schlafly become convinced, along with others, that the geostationary satellite relay would implement national television programming distribution. After the Canadian launch of ANIK I in November 1972, he contracted Scientific-Atlanta to build an eight-meter transportable satellite receiver, which was first demonstrated at the NCTA Cable Convention in Anaheim, California, June 18, 1973. The program, originating in Washington, DC, was called SPACECAST I.
In 1992, The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented him with an Emmy for Outstanding Achievement in broadband engineering development. In 1999 a second Emmy was awarded for development of the Lens Line Prompting System. He holds more than 16 patents and is an author and lecturer.
Susan E. Packard
President, Brand Outreach, Scripps Networks, 2008 Cable Hall of Fame
Susan E. Packard is responsible for aligning corporate citizenship activities with the business agenda of Scripps Networks, a division of E. W. Scripps. Her work maximizes the value of the lifestyle brands to the parent company, clients and to the consumer. The brands include HGTV, Food Network, DIY Network, Fine Living TV Network and Great American Country (GAC).
Susan was cofounder of HGTV and served in many leadership roles, including chief operating officer. She also served as president of Scripps Networks New Ventures, where she oversaw the development and launch of DIY Network and Fine Living. Prior to her current post, she was president of worldwide distribution for the Scripps cable brands.
Susan began her cable career at HBO then moved to NBC to help found CNBC. She brought her extensive experience to an unheard of idea - a cable TV network devoted entirely to homebuilding, remodeling, gardening and decorating - presented in an entertaining way. Under Packard's helm as chief operating officer, HGTV became one of the fastest growing cable networks in television history. Today HGTV is available in more than 95 million U.S. homes and distributed in 170 countries and territories. Susan helped to build Scripps Networks to a market value of over $6 billion.
Susan has been recognized by industry peers, colleagues and employees as an innovator, pioneer, role model and mentor. She received the Woman of the Year award by Women in Cable & Telecommunications (WICT) and was profiled in Modern Visionaries, a book chronicling the contributions of women to the cable and telecommunications industry. Contemporary Economics, a high school textbook, profiled her as an entrepreneur in the field of media specialization. Cablevision magazine cited her as one of "12 Most Powerful Women in Cable," and CableWorld magazine honored her among "The Most Influential Women in Cable." Most recently, she was the recipient of the 2007 YWCA Tribute to Women Award in the business and government category.
In 2004 she became the first woman elected to serve on the board of directors of Churchill Downs, Inc. (the Kentucky Derby).
Susan is active in national and local business and community affairs, and received the E.W. Scripps William R. Burleigh Award for distinguished community service. She serves on the executive committee of the Denver-based Cable Center board of directors; is the immediate past chair of the East Tennessee YMCA board of directors; serves on the board of an independent collegiate day school; lectures at universities; and is an advisor on children's healthcare issues and job training programs for the homeless.

Raymond E. Joslin
Founder and Former President, Hearst Entertainment, 2008 Cable Hall of Fame
Raymond E. Joslin is founder and former president of Hearst Entertainment & Syndication and former senior vice president and member of the board of directors of Hearst Corporation. He served the Corporation for over 24 years and continues as a consultant.
He is a cable television pioneer, a United States media ambassador, and a corporate entrepreneur, having carved successful careers in both the cable television systems and cable programming industries. For 43 years, he has built a career with a vision for growth, an eye for quality, and a commitment to corporate excellence. He was an initial partner in Continental Cablevision, Inc. shortly after its formation in the mid-1960s. Continental ultimately became the 3rd largest cable systems owner and operator in the industry.
Joslin has been responsible in all areas of senior management, finance, marketing, franchising, system construction, joint-venture development and administration, cable network programming, made-for-television movie production, programming distribution and electronic publishing. During his career, he has been either totally or substantially responsible for the franchising and construction of approximately 50 cable television systems and the formation of about 20 successful companies in the media and entertainment industry.
In 1981 and 1982, he was president of the California Cable Television Association, the industry's largest state and/or regional trade association and, in 1969, the president of the Ohio Cable Television Association. He has held various national and state industry positions including an appointment by the California legislature to the Senate-Assembly Joint Committee on Telecommunications. In 1979 and 1980, he led the California trade association's statewide rate deregulation and minority employment activities and was appointed by Governor Jerry Brown as vice chairman of the Foundation for Community Service Television. As president, Joslin led the California association's successful efforts to deregulate cable television in that state, ultimately setting the standard for national deregulation of the industry in 1985.
Since he arrived at Hearst Corporation in 1980 as group head of its new Cable Communications Group, the unit realized substantial growth. In 1981, Hearst joined Capital Cities/ABC in founding and developing several of the world's leading cable networks including ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNEWS, Classic Sports Network, Lifetime Television, Lifetime Movie Network, Lifetime Real Women, and A&E Networks including A&E, The History Channel, The Biography Channel and The History Channel International, the latter with both Capital Cities/ABC and NBC, Inc. Joslin helped establish the largest regional cable news service, New England Cable News (NECN), which now serves 3.7 million homes in New England. He is founding co-chairman of the boards of directors of A&E Networks and Lifetime Television serving each Company in that position for 24 years (1981-2004) and served as a director on the boards of ESPN (1991-2004) and NECN (1994-2004).
Joslin's appointment in 1989 to create and head the Hearst Entertainment & Syndication group, gave him the opportunity to work with and further develop businesses of the corporation. King Features Syndicate, the world's largest and most respected distributor and licensor of comics such as Popeye, Blondie, The Phantom, Betty Boop, Hagar the Horrible, Prince Valiant and Beetle Bailey, has continued to grow.
Joslin's other former trusteeships and board memberships include: trustee of Trinity College (1990-2007); chairman and a founding trustee for life of the Walter Kaitz Foundation; trustee of Boys Hope of New York; board member of the American Museum of the Moving Image and the International Radio and Television Society; national director of the American Association of Community and Junior Colleges (1983-1988); director of the Japan-United States Television and Radio Institute; director of MetaTV; director of National Magazine Company Limited in London, England.
He is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS), formerly serving on its National Emmy Awards Committee, a member of the Cable Pioneers Club and is an advisor to board of directors of The Cable Center.
In December of 1990, he was named by Channels magazine as one of 10 men and women who would help shape television in the decade ahead. In September 1995, Cablevison magazine named him a finalist worthy of "honorable mention" in its selection of the 20 people who have had the most impact on the cable television industry since its inception in the late 1940's. Each year from 1998 through 2003, Joslin had been named by CableFAX magazine as one of its Top 100 "Heavy Hitters" in the industry. In 2000, he was given the prestigious Avatar Award by the Broadcast and Cable Financial Management Association, received the Mogul Award from the American Museum of the Moving Image and was inducted into the Silver Circle of the New York chapter of NATAS. Since 1999, Joslin has co-sponsored, with The Cable Center and Trinity College (Hartford, CT), the Annual State of the Communications, Entertainment and Industries Interview: A Dialogue, featuring senior-most industry leaders interviewed by major newscasters.
He received the 1993 Alumni Achievement Award from Trinity College, his college's highest honor given to a graduate for achievement in business. In 1998 he was given the President's Leadership Medal and Alumni Medal for Excellence. In 2003 he was awarded the Eigenbrodt Cup, the highest and most prestigious alumni award the college can bestow for service to Trinity. The Joslin Family Scholarship Fund has granted 50 scholarships to Trinity College students since 1999.
He is a trustee of The St. Elmo's Foundation and a governor of the Delta Phi Fraternity National Board of Directors. He is an advisor to the Breast Cancer Alliance of Greenwich, Connecticut.
A native of Rhode Island, Joslin received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Trinity College in 1959, and has attended Carnegie Institute of Technology and Harvard Business School (SCMP).
Richard R. Green
President and Chief Executive Officer, CableLabs, 2008 Cable Hall of Fame
Richard R. Green is President and CEO of Cable Television Laboratories, Inc. (CableLabs®). In this position he heads the research and development organization responsible for charting the cable television industry's course in technology. Green has served in this role for the past 20 years.
Under Green's leadership, CableLabs has managed key technology developments that have helped the cable industry expand services to include high speed data delivery and telephony, new business lines that generate $15 billion and $5 billion annually, respectively. The development of the Data over Cable Services Interface Specification (DOCSIS?) has resulted in cable's dominance of the High-Speed Data market in North America and the retail availability of high-speed cable modems. The data service provides a base for a successful and growing business in telephony for the cable industry.
Of current importance is the deployment of interactive television services including targeted advertising and web-based video services now being deployed under the advanced digital devices (OpenCable?) project. Other initiatives focus on sophisticated use of packet technology on cable systems to deliver multimedia services (PacketCable?), extending DOCSIS into the home (CableHome?), Go2BroadbandSM, an industry-wide service locator, and CableB2B, an initiative to support the automation of regular, day-to-day business communication between cable system operators and Internet content providers.
Prior to CableLabs®, Green held the position of senior vice president of Broadcast Operations and Engineering at the Public Broadcasting Service where his contributions included construction of national network origination and transmission facilities. He was instrumental in establishing Public Broadcasting as a leader in High Definition Television and digital audio transmission technology. Prior to his role at PBS, he helped organize and establish the Advanced Television Systems Committee, a multi-industry-supported organization founded to develop voluntary national standards for advanced television. He held the position of Executive Director of that organization until 1983.
From 1980 to 1983, Green was director of the CBS Advanced Television Technology Laboratory in Stamford, Conn. In addition to his work at CBS in digital television and high-definition TV, Green participated in international standardization efforts that date from the late 1970s and chaired the committee that developed CCIR (now ITU-R) Recommendation 601, a worldwide television standard for digital signals. He is currently chairman of SG9, a United Nations signatory committee (ITU-T) charged with the responsibility of recommending worldwide standards for advanced television services.
Green served as Director of Engineering at Time Fiber Communication from 1979-1980. In that role he developed technology for cabling of fiber and electro-optic and laser technology for application in cable distribution.
From 1977 to 1979, Dr. Green managed ABC's Video Tape Post Production Department in Hollywood, and from 1972 to 1977, he directed basic research in laser technology for the Hughes Aircraft Co. in Los Angeles. Green served as a senior staff scientist for Boeing Scientific Research Laboratories (1964-1972), and as an assistant professor at the University of Washington (1968-1972).
Green is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the CTAM Board of Directors, the IEC (International Engineering Consortium) Board of Directors, the National Cable Television Center and Museum Executive Committee, is Chairman of Study Group 9 of the International Telecommunications Union, is Chairman of the Communications Technology Advisory Board, is a member of the FCC Technical Advisory Council, and is a Cable Television Pioneer. He also is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a fellow of the Society of Motion Picture and TV Engineers.
He is the author of more than 55 technical papers on topics ranging from TV production to electro-optical and laser research. Green was voted CED's Man of the Year in 1991 and was selected by ElectronicMedia as one of 12 people in the US media to watch in 1993. He is the recipient of the 1999 NCTA Vanguard Award for Science & Technology. Green managed and produced the first HDTV programs in the U.S. in December of 1981.

President, ESPN, Inc., 2008 Cable Hall of Fame
An ESPN and cable industry pioneer, George Bodenheimer, 49, was named ESPN's fifth President in 1998, and since then he has led an unprecedented period of growth for ESPN. Bodenheimer's path to leadership mirrors that of ESPN itself - with his sharp focus on creativity and cutting-edge innovation, his emphasis on always enhancing value for ESPN's fans and business partners, and his conviction for teamwork. In 2003, he was also appointed President of ABC Sports, overseeing all the multimedia sports assets of The Walt Disney Company, and in 2004 he assumed the role of co-chairman, Disney Media Networks, encompassing strategic planning for Disney's media assets.

He established an organizational structure with leaders focusing on six areas: content across all media, technology, international, sales and marketing, finance and administration.
Bodenheimer joined the company after college in January 1981 as a driver in the mailroom. He rose through the ranks becoming Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing in 1996. He was graduated from Denison University in 1980 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics, and he is married with three children.
