Jay Rolls

Mr. Jay A. Rolls has been Chief Technology officer and Senior Vice President of Charter Communications, Inc. since August 2011. Mr. Rolls has more than 25 years of experience in engineering, technology architecture and business development. He served as Senior Vice President of Technology at Cox Communications, Inc. and responsible for technology and architectures across all of their communications and entertainment product lines. Mr. Rolls provided strategic direction for enterprise-wide engineering design, development and future technologies across all Cox product lines. Mr. Rolls joined Cox in 1995 as Director of Multimedia Technology. He served as Vice President of Data Engineering at Cox since 2001 and its Vice President of Telephone & Data Engineering since 2003. He served as Vice President of Technology at Cox, where he oversaw technology engineering for all voice, video and Internet products. Prior to Cox, he was the Vice President of Business Development at Pacific Broadband Communications, Inc.

Prior to joining the company, he served as the Vice President of Network Engineering at Excite@Home. In that position he was responsible for Excite@Home's IP network infrastructure, including nationwide backbone, regional networks, interconnects, routing, portal infrastructure, test and integration of cable modem equipment, and network security. He serves as a Member of the University of Virginia Electrical & Computer Engineering's Advisory Board. Also while at Excite@Home, Mr. Rolls served on the technical advisory boards of two CMTS equipment vendors. From 1995 to 1998, Mr. Rolls was the Director for Multimedia Technology at Cox Communications. There he was responsible for the launch of high speed data services for the MSO. In that role, he built business cases, manpower, architectures, processes and partnerships in order to launch cable modems on Cox's hybrid-fiber coax plant. With Cox, Mr. Rolls participated in the formation of the MCNS specification. While working at both Cox and Excite@Home, Mr. Rolls served on the DOCSIS Certification Board. P

rior to working with Cox, Mr. Rolls spent nine years in Germany; from 1993 to 1995 with Alcatel Telekom as a Project Development Manager for the Interactive Broadband Network Systems Integration group. Principal work involved the introduction of video-on-demand products, services, and pilot tests, including two German field trials with DBP Telekom. And from 1986 to 1993, he worked for BBN Communications where he was General Manager of BBN's European operations for the Defense Data Network, where he managed both network operations and field service. He received the Vanguard Award for Science and Technology in 2009.

Mr. Rolls received a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Virginia in 1983 and a M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in 1988.
