Ambassador, The Cable Center
In March of 2002, The Cable Center appointed Leslie H. (Les) Read – known to all of us as Mr. HBO – as its Ambassador. As Ambassador, Read promotes The Cable Center and its mission of research, innovation, and achievement throughout the cable industry. Read joined Home Box Office, Inc. (HBO) in February 1974 as manager, affiliate development. He was later named director, Northeast region and then director, national accounts. In 1984, Read became director, affiliate special projects. In 1998, he was promoted to Vice President and remained in that role until his retirement in December 2001. Read worked with HBO's affiliate cable systems on special marketing campaigns and also served as an announcer during on-air promotions. Before joining HBO, Read worked for 15 years at Teleprompter Corporation. He sold teleprompting services as well as built and operated cable systems in: Elmira, New York; Great Falls, Montana, and Farmington, New Mexico. He later developed new franchise areas as director of operations.
In 1972, he became vice president of TelePrompter's CATV division. He started his cable and broadcast career as a page at NBC in New York in 1958. Read has a business degree from Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts as well as a degree in speech/radio and television from Syracuse University. He is executive director of the Cable TV Pioneers, board member of The Cable Center, member of CTAM, and is also a past president of the New York Cable TV Association. Read was raised in Great Neck, Long Island. Along with his wife Anne, he currently resides in Port Washington, New York.
