Barco Library Equipment Collection
Coffee can amplifiers. Signal processors. Vacuum-tubes that glow in the dark. These are just a few of the more than 2,000 pieces of equipment that trace the fascinating history of the cable industry from the transistors of the 1950s to the fiber optics of today.
The industry, in a brief timeframe, moved from a single off-air antenna transmitting one or two channels, to a satellite-delivered entertainment medium providing a huge variety of channels to millions of television viewers. It is a dramatic story that is illustrated clearly in the innovative adaptation of existing technology by the pioneers of the industry.
From twisted pair to coaxial cable, weather sensors to every example of a remote you’ve lost in the couch cushions — nearly any object that can tell the story of cable has a home here. Some of the companies that are represented here are Jerrold, Scientific Atlanta, Vikoa, Holt, Entron, Viking, Avantek, C-Cor, Spencer Kennedy Laboratories, Texscan and Blonder Tongue Laboratories.
