Students at Northwestern University received a rare treat on November 9, when Rich Cronin, President & CEO, and John Roberts, Senior Vice President, Interactive and Online Entertainment, of Game Show Network closed out the outstanding 2006 season of the Mavericks Lecture Series with a full day of events. With comedian-like humor and delivery, Cronin and Roberts regaled students with career advice, tales of GSN’s success, and anecdotes from their own five-star careers in the cable industry.
Students Captivated by the Experts
The students were mesmerized, particularly when Cronin talked about once being in their position himself, interning during college summers as a cameraman when he decided he wanted to get into television. Roberts also held their attention with a story of hearing from a roommate of a new technology called the World Wide Web, and immediately buying a book on the subject so he could be a “Web expert” to prospective employers.
A Worthwhile Investment for All
Mike Smith, Executive Director of Northwestern’s Media Management Center, said, “The day spent with the GSN guys was excellent for the students.” Students weren’t the only ones benefiting from the lectures. The audience was filled with VIPs, including press, Illinois State Senator Dan Cronin, Comcast regional executives Joe Stackhouse and Pat Keenan, and a camera crew recording the event for a local Comcast show. Comcast generously sponsored the day’s program.
Cronin and Roberts felt that their time was well-spent. Cronin expressed a need to connect with these students because they represent a pool of talent from which GSN must someday draw future employees. Roberts agreed. “These kids—they’re my peeps,” he joked.
