Showtime Networks and Time Warner Cable Executives Reveal Career Do’s and Don’ts

Students from Smith College were treated to a day of academic and career retrospection, corporate presentations, and career counseling from two leading cable executives.  Carol Mechanic, SVP, Programming for Showtime Networks and Dawn Callahan, VP, Marketing for Time Warner Cable in Los Angeles, visited and interacted with over 150 students from the nation’s largest liberal arts college for women and four surrounding colleges.

After numerous stops with film, English and media students, an informal brown bag lunch was provided for 10 lucky students to talk with the guest speakers in a more personal setting.

The day was highlighted with an evening reception and lecture that not only included a large number of Smith attendees, but students from Amherst College, Hampshire College, Mount Holyoke College and the University of Massachusetts.  Throughout the presentation, premium gifts from some of Showtime’s top rated original programs, like “The L Word” and “Weeds”, were awarded to students who actively participated in the program.

Carol and Dawn revealed their “Do’s and Don’ts” on-the-job list that included:

  • Do raise your hand for extra work.
  • Do offer solutions, not problems.
  • Do put in the hours.
  • Do ask for honest feedback and then take action against your development needs.
  • Do study.  Stay current with your job, your industry, the world.
  • Do network.
  • Do document your success.
  • Do be geographically flexible.
  • Don’t gossip.
  • Don’t put anything in email, IM, or electronic media that you wouldn’t want your boss to read.
  • Don’t focus only on the “perks.”
  • Don’t be the first to leave and the last to arrive.  Sometimes image is everything.
  • Don’t forget to practice your elevator speech.
