The Mavericks Lecture Series launched the busy 2006 fall season in style September 19 at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Pat Esser, president of Cox Communications, spoke to students, faculty and prominent Gainesville community members at a day-long series of events managed and sponsored by The Cable Center.
The Main Event
More than 200 students attended Esser’s varied and humor-laced lecture that included the story of his own fascinating journey from cable installer to president of a major national telecommunications company.
"The development of this event started many months ago, and we are so pleased that all of our efforts paid off to bring together UFL’s Top 10 communications school with a dynamic executive like Pat Esser", says Dolly Bonner, director of programs and education at The Cable Center.
David Ostroff, chair of the University of Florida's Department of Telecommunication, said, "We are honored to have this business leader share his perspectives with us and are fortunate to have this partnership with The Cable Center."
Connecting with Students Face to Face
Esser had a few questions for the students as well. Before the lecture day, he e-mailed a ten-question survey about media consumption habits to 200 students in the University’s journalism school. Within 48 hours, he had 150 responses. He used this feedback in a focus group with 25 students, speaking to them about the echo boomer generation’s impact on the future of media and broadband.
Carly Litzenberger, a senior telecommunications student, said “The lecture was excellent! (Esser) was humorous and informative with each topic discussed. I was amazed at how "normal" a CEO of a major company can be.”
