The Austin W. Shanfelter Dissertation Grant program is intended to support and encourage Ph.D. candidates conducting research addressing issues of significance to cable and broadband telecommunications. Ph.D. candidates whose dissertation will focus on some aspect of the cable and broadband telecommunications industry are encouraged to apply for this annual grant.

AUSTIN W. SHANFELTER
Cable Education and Research

Austin W. Shanfelter began his career in the cable industry in 1969. As a pioneer in the cable industry, Shanfelter founded Shanco, a cable television infrastructure provider in 1985 that was acquired by MasTec in 1997. Shanfelter worked within MasTec, rising to the company’s president and chief executive officer position in 2001. Shanfelter was a member of the board of the Power and Communications Contractors Association (PCCA) and chairman of the organization’s Cable Television Contractors Council.

The Dissertation Research Grant was named for Austin W. Shanfelter by his son, Austin J. Shanfelter. Shanfelter said of his father, "He impacted so many lives with his passion and commitment for the industry that I feel this is an appropriate way to continue to recognize my father in an industry he loved for 30 years. It is with great pride on my mother’s and family’s behalf that this donation goes to such a wonderful cause."
