Being the Public Relations Intern, Comcast

As the Public Relations Intern, I have been helping the three-member Comcast public relations team with various projects. The public relations team is separated into three specialties- media relations, internal communication, and community affairs and I have had the opportunity to be involved in each of these three areas.

In media relations, for example, I am compiling an ongoing file of media clips from local news sources that concern Comcast’s service and products for the past two years.

Other than outside media sources, Comcast’s Colorado division has its own employee newsletter distributed weekly, which is part of the internal communications section. I wrote a few stories for the newsletter as well as helping to start a searchable archive of past newsletters.

In community affairs I helped compose and send letters to city council members about Comcast’s Leaders and Achievers Scholarship Program winners.

In addition to working with the public relations team, I have also had the opportunity to spend time at Comcast Entertainment Television (CET). Comcast’s own television channel, CET is devoted to programming that specifically interests Colorado residents. At CET, I have logged and digitized footage for promotional spots for various shows that air on CET. I also helped write the script for and shoot a commercial.

Being able to work with two very different departments of Comcast, I have learned an innumerable amount about the inner workings of a cable operator. Prior to the specific projects I worked on with the public relations team, I also had the chance to visit the call center, speak with Senior Vice President Scott Binder, and spend time with the sales team. Each of these experiences showed me a different side of Comcast and broadened my awareness of how a cable service provider operates.
