Overview:
John is dying to get the band from college back together for a jam session, but there’s one big problem—nobody lives
on campus anymore. In fact, John lives in Austin, the drummer Michael lives in Los Angeles, and the bass player Jane
recently moved to Berlin. Are their “jamming” days, and the days of millions of other musicians like them, really over?
Not anymore.
Until recently, the ideas of “getting the band together” or musical collaboration were determined by geographic location.
Simply put, all the musicians needed to be in the same room. Or, if performers wanted to collaborate remotely, each
musician would need to go through the time consuming process of recording and editing separately, often using
expensive equipment and studio time. Thanks to high-speed Internet delivery and eJamming¨, those days are over.
In this display, musicians, using eJamming’s AUDiiO service, will demonstrate an actual online musical session. The
service, provided via downloadable software allows musicians to collaborate and record from remote locations in real
time using broadband cable connections. Musicians can set up their own virtual personal spaces (for a band, for
example), or they can enter a general lobby and collaborate with any users that are currently online. Additionally,
recordings are better-than-CD quality and can be saved in electronic files.
Technology Displayed:
eJamming’s AUDiiO and JamCasts services connect musicians to each other and their fans over computers or
through wireless internet devices, such as cell phones or personal digital assistants (PDAs), that are connected to
cable modems via wireless routers. The real time low-latency peer-to-peer synchronization technology behind these
services enables playing and recording among multiple musicians in different locations over a broadband Internet
connection and netcasting those sessions/concerts in real time to the fans those musicians attract.
Cable Modems (500 kbps upload speeds) allow for a three-player eJamming session within a region or a two-player
session at a greater distance, assuming that tight synchrony is the goal. If not, the players can connect
comfortably when even further away from each other, even between countries and continents. Premium Cable
service (750kbps to 1mBps upload speeds) allows up to four simultaneous audio performers within a region and two
to three musicians at even greater distance, even across oceans if the players’ goal is other than tight synchrony.
