Local chapters of Cable Positive, CTAM, NAMIC and WICT will square off in a test of cable knowledge during The Cable's Center's inaugural Cable Center Showdown, a trivia challenge to be held from 11a.m. to 1p.m. on Wednesday, October 10th during Cable Days. In true game-show format, teams of four from each local cable organization will battle against each other for a $1,000 cash prize for their respective group, as well as bragging rights to the coveted Cable Center Showdown trophy. All questions for the event will be derived from The Cable Center's Barco Library and will include a mix of cable history and trivia. Each of the teams will also name an honorary coach to help them in their quest to be the tournament champion. The event will be emceed by Jim Honiotes, Vice President at Lynch Cable Resources, Inc.

HBO®, in partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), launches the ADDICTION project, an unprecedented multi-platform campaign aimed at helping Americans understand addiction as a chronic but treatable brain disease. The campaign includes a 14-part documentary series; a companion book published by Rodale Press; four independent addiction-themed films; a comprehensive website and an unprecedented 30-city nationwide community outreach campaign funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and coordinated by Join Together, Faces and Voices of Recovery, and Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA). The ADDICTION project brings together the leading researchers and institutions that are utilizing effective new medications and behavioral therapies, changing the ways we think about addiction, addiction treatment and recovery.

The Cable Center and Bravo/NBC Universal kicked off a nationally exposed two-day television production workshop for high school students in Denver. The Barco Library provided research for an Educator Kit that Bravo is developing for classrooms across the country. "On the Set" offered students the opportunity to learn about media by providing hands-on experience with the television production process. Students produced their own video that will be included in public service announcement-style television spots about the importance of diversity.

In its third year, The Cable Center joined forces with local Denver schools, The History Channel en Español, Comcast Denver and The University of Denver VIP Program in celebrating and learning more about their Hispanic heritage through engaging programming and creative competition. This year’s program included a September kick-off announcement that featured a local and national photo contest "Celebrate Life - Capture Every Moment", and in October, a special screening and interactive discussion. Students had an opportunity to win prizes for themselves, for their teachers, and for their schools.

College students interested in TV and cable industry careers were invited to meet with top professionals, received constructive feedback, attend breakout sessions. Students had the opportunity to talk to anchors, reporters, photographers, editors, cable industry experts, and sportscasters. In addition, they were advised on launching their own TV and cable careers and learned about memberships and internships with The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS).

The 2004 Joslin Lecture, The Sixth State of the Communication, Entertainment, and Information Industries, featured an interview with George Bodenheimer, President of ESPN and ABC Sports and co-chair of Disney Media Networks, conducted by Chris Berman, sportscaster and host of ESPN’s NFL Countdown and Primetime. This event was made possible through the generosity of Raymond E. Joslin, who was also present to speak with students.

The seventh annual Cable Television Hall of Fame Celebration honored seven individuals – Jack Crosby, John Goddard, Robert Johnson, Geraldine Laybourne, Paul Maxwell, Trygve Myhren and June Travis – who represent the creativity and inventiveness that has been the foundation of the cable telecommunications industry. Each year The Cable Center’s board of directors appoints a Cable Television Hall of Fame selection committee comprised of leaders throughout the industry, who select individuals that have contributed the entrepreneurship and ingenuity leaving an indelible mark on furthering the industry’s growth and prosperity. In recognition of their efforts, their achievements, and their contributions we present each honoree with the highest honor – induction into The Cable Television Hall of Fame.

The Cable Center’s second annual sponsorship of Hispanic Heritage featured the announcement of the photo art collage contest winners, a screening of The History Channel’s documentary The History of Cinco de Mayo, and a pizza lunch for 200 high school and middle school students, who were then able to engage in an interactive discussion with Hispanic community leaders, including Anne Trujillo of Denver’s Channel 7 News.

The Donald W. Levenson 2004 lecture was part of an ongoing educational series designed to inform, inspire, and motivate the new generation of cable telecommunications innovators. This year’s featured speaker was Tony Werner, Senior Vice President and Chief Technology officer of Liberty Media Corporation, who spoke to students about the changes in cable over the years, as well as the aspects of technology and business most relevant to the industry today.

Partnering with Rainbow Media, this community outreach event featured five provocative films from Rainbow’s IFC, AMC, World Pics, and WE, including the documentary A Beautiful Obsession and Stephen King’s infamous horror film The Shining, which was shown in High Definition. This exciting event also marked The Cable Center’s inaugural use of the Rogers Outdoor Amphitheater.

Guests at this event relived Stage 17 of the 2004 Tour de France and celebrated Lance Armstrong’s sixth Tour win. OLN’s rebroadcast of this historic event attracted cycling fans of all ages, and was featured on four cycling websites. Guest speaker Ron Keifel, seven-time Tour de France competitor, entertained the audience with tales of his own Tour experiences.

The Roast was held at the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) 2004 Conference, where Bill Bresnan was the honored good-natured prey of an onslaught of barbs, jokes, and tawdry tales hurled his way by an admiring throng of colleagues and fellow cable luminaries.

An exclusive screening and High Definition (HD) seminar was conducted at The Cable Center by Discovery HD Theater executive Clint Stinchcomb. The Center’s guests were treated to a sneak preview of never-before-seen footage from Discovery’s documentary Arctic Mission: Voyage of the Sedna, seeing everything from majestic polar bears to stately icebergs as the Sedna traveled through the legendary Northwest Passage.

A sneak preview of Court TV’s original movie Chasing Freedom was brought to viewers through a partnership between The Cable Center, Court TV, Active Voice, and the Rocky Mountain Survivors Center (RMSC). This movie portrayed a tale of political asylum, post September 11th, and a panel discussion following the screening included representatives from Court TV, the RMSC, and students and professors from the University of Denver’s College of Law.

A Walk in Your Shoes - Living With HIV/AIDS A Walk in Your Shoes - Living With HIV/AIDS »

Presented by The Cable Center, The N, and Cable Positive, this event was targeted towards teens and their parents. "A Walk in Your Shoes: Living With HIV/AIDS" followed three teenagers—two with HIV/AIDS, one untouched by the disease. A program video and teaching materials were given to attendees and to local high schools. This event was one way the cable industry lends their support to the battle against HIV/AIDS.

The Center’s HDTV Festival was continued with ESPN’s controversial original series Playmakers. This series drew attention from throughout the industry for its gritty depiction of life off the playing field, as well as for being ESPN Original Entertainment’s first dramatic series. Special guests to this event were the University of Denver’s NCAA Championship Men’s Hockey Team.

A sneak premiere of HBO’s original new series Carnivale kicked off the Cable Center’s HDTV Video Festival. The world premiere of the first episode of Carnivale also marked the first event of The Center’s HDTV Programming Festival, an ongoing event which showcased cable programming achievements in High Definition television, the newest evolution of visual communications.

MSNBC produced an exciting live broadcast event from The Daniels Great Hall in The Cable Center. A University of Denver audience of five hundred students attended the event, participating in a production seminar and engaging in interactive lectures with Chris Matthews and the crew of Hardball.

A special screening and panel discussion of Court TV’s original movie The Interrogation of Michael Crowe addressed the issues of coerced juvenile confessions. This Peabody Award winner drew an audience that included lawyers, law students, Denver District Attorney Bill Ritter, local radio host Peter Boyles, and many others. The format of this screening and discussion was so successful at The Center that it was replicated by CourtTV at Yale, Penn, and other top law schools.
