The Cable Center, Comcast, The History Channel,
A&E, The Biography Channel, and The History Channel en
Español have been proud to partner in sponsoring a celebration
of Hispanic Heritage Month in Denver through Urban Education
Initiatives in 2003 and 2004.
This event was so beloved by students and educators when it
debuted in 2003 that a second celebration was planned in 2004,
with expanded activities.

Photo Collage Contest
Our Photo Collage Contest was open to ninth to twelfth grade
students. Classrooms were encouraged to create original photo
collage posters that fit within a Hispanic theme. Participating
West High School and Manual Arts and Cultural High School classrooms
submitted their collages by October 13 to The Cable Center
and were judged locally. Local winners were entered in the
national contest sponsored by A&E Television Networks.
Over 400 entries from around the country, including Denver,
were judged by A&E staff in New York. A&E Television
Networks awarded Mr. Richard Chainhalt’s Student Leadership
class from Denver’s West High School—where 82%
of the 1700 students are Hispanic—with multiple prizes
for their entry “HISPANIC,” including $250 check
awarded to the school, a KODAK Easyshare DX7440 Zoom Digital
Camera, and an A&E Television VHS Video Library.

“Unsung Heroes” : Hispanics and the
Medal of Honor
On Monday, October 6th at 12:30 pm, The Programming Institute
at The Cable Center partnered with A&E Network and Comcast
for the screening of The History Channel's Unsung Heroes: Hispanics
and the Medal of Honor. This was part of The Programming Institute's
goal of promoting education and outreach programs during Hispanic
Heritage Month.
The featured program celebrated the lives of five Hispanic-American
Medal of Honor recipients, who not only heroically served their
country, but also raised public awareness of the Latino tradition
of service to country. A&E, The History Channel and The
Biography Channel celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with a
combined 40 hours of special programming featured on each network.
The Cable Center hosted a full house of students from West
High School, Rishel Middle School, a dozen teachers, DU Faculty
and staff, and DU VIP students, who attended West High School
and continued their service by mentoring students from West
and Rishel. |
