Denver, Colorado - The Cable Center, a global resource of information, training, and educational programs about and for the cable telecommunications industry, presents a stellar speaking lineup for the winter semester's virtual learning course, "Issues in Media and Public Policy," a unique accredited course in communications and political science for college students across the country. The class is delivered via a high speed fiber line from C-SPAN's studios in Washington, D.C. to The Cable Center's Distance Learning Studio in Denver and promotes direct, real-time interaction among the professors, guests, and students.
Past guests have included NBC's Brian Williams & Tim Russert, ABC's Ted Koppel & Ann Compton, CBS' Walter Cronkite; as well as Senator Hillary Clinton, Senator Ken Salazar, Senator George Allen, Senator Edward Kennedy, former President Gerald Ford, White House Counselor Dan Bartlett, and White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan. This semester's program serves students from the University of Denver, George Mason University, and Pace University. Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism will also be participating in some classes this semester, and other additional school involvement is pending.
Taught by Steve Scully, C-SPAN senior executive producer and political editor, "Issues in Media and Public Policy" examines and analyzes how issues facing society become law. The focus includes the process of public policymaking and the role the media play in shaping the debate and the ultimate results. Issues covered range from "hot" topic areas such as abortion, taxes, and the economy, to foreign policy issues such as the United States' involvement in Iraq and the future of the United Nations. In today's 24/7 news cycle, the class also offers an in-depth analysis of the way news and information are gathered and disseminated. From the Internet and cable television, to political issue ads and blogs, the course focuses on how changing technology impacts and affects the political debate in the United States.
"The 'Issues in Media and Public Policy' class allows students to delve into the issues facing the United States today with leaders from both the political and media realm," said Susan Greene, senior vice president of programs and education at The Cable Center. "In a completely unique learning environment, these students are able to talk and debate with current leaders as well as get first-hand views on how these issues shape the politics in our country."
Highlights of the course include Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives discussing the The 1994 Mid-Term Elections & Republican Control of Congress (January 17); USA TODAY's editor-in-chief Ken Paulsen presenting The Future of Newspapers (January 31), and Jay Carney, TIME's Washington bureau chief, and Joe Lockhart, White House press secretary for the Clinton Administration discussing Press & the Presidency (March 2).
