Intrapreneurs in Action - Kristin Turner

If we’ve learned one thing from airline travel, it’s that in the event of a change in air pressure, you need to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others.

Kristin Turner, IA Class 4 graduate, applied this traveler wisdom by using her IA project to create a training program to engage and retain the HR and Communications people at her company, Liberty Global.

Kristin Turner, IA Class 4 graduate, applied this traveler wisdom by using her IA project to create a training program to engage and retain the HR and Communications people at her company, Liberty Global.

As Director of People at Liberty Global, Kristin has created training programs for many of Liberty Global’s employees, but until she participated in IA Class 4, she hadn’t done so for her own People and Communications (PAC) team.
The problem she came to the class with was, “How can we better engage our PAC team so that they can grow a career at Liberty Global?”

“I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but the steps I learned in IA helped to organize my thinking,” said Kristin. “Using one of the first steps, I interviewed people in my group about what they wanted and used that information to develop my idea into a real program.”

From that assessment, Kristin outlined a People and Communications Academy based on a competency model, which will offer modules in three areas: leadership, professional skills (such as finance, storytelling, and presentation skills), and HR and Communications functional skills.

Kristin acknowledged that innovation takes time. Since graduating from IA Class 4 in spring of 2019, it took a year to get traction, gain approval, and begin course development. “The hardest part is for us to make our own development a priority,” added Kristin. “Creating the business plan and elevator pitch in IA helped me socialize the idea throughout my organization.”

They will be rolling out the first 90-minute online module in March, and plan on introducing 2 new modules each quarter for the rest of this year. The program builds upon Liberty Global’s values and the theme of having all employees “Grow with Us.”

We applaud Kristin for innovating a creative solution for engaging and retaining the people who do so much to engage and retain others at Liberty Global. To paraphrase Barbra Streisand, “People who support people are the luckiest people in the world.”
